Homemade beauty recipes: Your next step towards sustainability and gorgeous skin!

Homemade beauty products are becoming more popular not only because well, they’re safer and healthier for the skin but also because consumers are becoming more conscious about the ingredients used in producing beauty and make-up products.

Taking a DIY approach for your beauty products not only will help you maintain control on what goes into them but it could also call for a get-together beauty session with the girls!

Here are a few simple safe DIY recipes we recommend you to try!

  1. Homemade Foundation Powder: Start with a base of arrowroot powder (1 tsp for dark skin and 1 tbs for light skin). Slowly add in a combination of cocoa powder, cinnamon or nutmeg until you reach your desired tone. If you want more of a compact foundation, add a few drops of olive oil to the mixture and press down into a compact. You can apply this using a brush.

  2. Homemade Face Scrub: Mix together sugar and safflower oil (2:1 ratio) and mashed kiwi to get this scrub. Massage the scrub onto your skin and rinse after. This scrub helps moisturise and brighten your skin while giving you skin that feels fresh.

  3. Homemade Solid Perfumes: Solid perfumes are easily customizable to any taste using essential oil blends or fragrance oils. Pick two essential oils or fragrance oils like vanilla or ylang ylang. Pour a small quantity (1 tbs) of the oils in a dish and add 1 tsp of beeswax and coconut oil over medium heat and stir the mixture until melted. Pour the melted mixture into a container of your choice and let it set. Apply a small amount to your wrists or at the nape of your neck as many times as you please.

  4. Beet Powder Blush: Making your blush powder using beet is incredibly easy to make. Slice up a beetroot and dry the slices under the sun until completely moisture-ridden. Once thoroughly dried, crunch up the beet chips and place it in a grinder. Pulse until the beet chips are fine powder like with no big pieces. Put this powder in a container and use it as a blush! Who knew a vegetable could colour your cheeks as well?

  5. Ultra-Moisturising Avocado Hair Mask: Give your split ends a royal treatment with this nourishing hair mask. Take 2 tbs Avocado oil and half a cup of mayonnaise and mix it in a bowl while adding 1 tbs of honey in it. Keep stirring the mixture till you get a paste that is of even consistency, much like a very rich hair conditioner. Apply this conditioning mask in your hair and leave it in from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Shampoo your hair normally afterwards.
